Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

March 5, 2008

 

The regular meeting of the Hunters Woods PTA was held on March 5, 2008 in the Hunters Woods Elementary School library.  The meeting was called to order at 7:56 pm by PTA President Maureen Becker.

 

The February 6th meeting minutes were read and approved as corrected.

                        *Under Committee Reports the word Marquee was spelled incorrectly.

 

Correspondence:

Marina Matthes read a note of thanks, from the Art Dept., for support of the Artist in Residence program and the purchase of aprons for classroom use.

 

PresidentŐs Report:

Maureen reminded everyone to use all forms of communication to advertise events, including getting information to Kelly Geer so that it can be posted to the PTA web site.

Thanks to Hillary Bradley and Annie Nasr for their contributions to Skate Night; $1000.00 was raised.  Also thanks to Delta Pelgrim for heading up Talent Share which will be held Friday, March 7th at 7:00 pm.

Maureen reported that Fine Arts night on March 11th will not have a dinner attached to the event.

 

Treasurers Report:

It was reported that there are still some outstanding expenses, but things are in line.  We have approved $5000 of the budgeted $12000 in Teacher Mini Grants; half of the $5000 has been spent.

There is a proposed budget amendment, to spend down the reserve, of $8800 for science enrichment that will be discussed and voted on at the April meeting.

 

Teachers Report: None

 

Committee Reports:

 

Silent Auction – Susan Sather reported the Auction will be held April 12th, 5:00 pm.  Letters are out to Corp. donors and we are in the process of asking for donations. Marina Matthes will be organizing the Teacher donations and Class Baskets.  Julie Anne Hood will be organizing the Basket Workshop on April 3rd.  Ruth Barkon will manage the check out process.  Trellis Evans will need help in running the dance to be held the same evening from 5-9 pm.  We are still looking for a volunteer to organize the food for the evening.

 

Membership – Susan Brownsword explained how the dollar amount for dues was calculated and that the State PTA has stated not to undervalue the PTA.  We will not be selling directory ads next year nor will we or have we ever sold directories to non-school families or organizations.  There was discussion on how to handle dues for next year, and the possibility of using your membership card for discounts with local businesses.  It was reported that it will cost $2300 to produce the directory with out ads.

Susan Sather made the following motion:      

            Motion for $10.00 family membership to the Hunters Woods PTA, dues to include one membership to National, State and County PTA.  Additional memberships can be purchased to these 3 organizations for $3.00.  Teacher memberships will cost $5.00.  One school calendar will be included with each family membership.  All HWES families will receive a school directory, regardless of membership status.

 

PrincipalŐs Report:

Mrs. Toatley reported that everyone is looking forward to spring being here!  On March 13th will have a visitor from Japan touring our school to look at our school technology.  She reported that Mrs. Mentzer successfully defended her dissertation and is officially Dr. Mentzer.  We are in the midst of battling the flu in the school – please remind your children to wash their hands.  The career fair is coming on March 26th – thanks to all those who are helping with this event.

 

Mini Grants:

The school counselors are asking for $300 for food for career day.  The money will buy coffee, bagels for speakers in the morning and to provide them with lunch for the day.  Susan Sather so moved, Nancy Mamros seconded the motion, vote was taken, motion passed.

 

Head Start requested $300 for 2 shows with Glee Mania, which is an interactive puppet show.  Olivia Toatley so moved, Kelly Geer seconded the motion, vote was taken, motion passed.

 

New Business:

Christine Arakelian came to discuss the creation of a Science Olympiad team for HWES.  It would be for 5th & 6th graders and they would compete on the state then national level.  This is a science competition on various science topics.  There is a registration fee of $150.  She is requesting that the PTA pay for the registration fee.  Eleanor Weis so moved, Nancy Mamros seconded the motion, vote was taken, motion passed.

 

The meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm.
