Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

November 7, 2007

The regular meeting of the Hunters Woods PTA was held on November 7, 2007 at the Hunters Woods Elementary School library. The meeting was called to order at 7:45pm by PTA President Maureen Becker.

The October 10th meeting minutes were read and approved as written.

Correspondence: None

President’s Report:

Maureen Becker reported that the Fall Harvest Committee was still in need of volunteers and there is still a need for a Sweet-Shop Coordinator. Maureen thanked Lisa Groves for organizing HWES food donations to FISH; Shashi Ravishankar and Trellis Evans for coordinating the Sock Hop; Eleanor Weis, Nancy Mamros and Cathy Uhrig for Chairing the Sally Foster sale. Maureen also reminded everyone about using WHWE for getting the word out about upcoming events – the contact for that is Mr. Ware, all you need to do is send him an e-mail regarding your event.

Teacher’s Report:

Rachel Negri, Science Teacher, introduced Danny Rosemond, former HWES student, who is a Boy Scout working on earning his Eagle Scout rank. His project involves the creation of a map of VA made of stone to be placed on the grounds of HWES. Materials will be delivered this Friday and work begins this Saturday. Luckstone Rock donated all rock materials. $500 was requested to cover other costs – these funds have already been budgeted for.

Rachel also reported that the following projects will be happening thanks to PTA funding.

·      Science presenters

·      Replacing planter beds on HWES grounds

·      Stone map project

·      Getting a shed to safeguard items purchased for grounds keeping

·      Buying 4 laptops for science lab and donate current ones to the learning lab for special ed. Department

·      Murals depicting science, in designated bathrooms

She also reported that HWES has been chosen to start a tree nursery. Trees will be started from seeds and then replanted within the county.

Treasurer’s Report:

Maureen Becker reported in the absence of Treasurer Deborah Lannen. Budget/Actuals report distributed to meeting attendees. A question about Teacher supplies line item not being used was asked. Maureen to remind new teachers who have not taken advantage of this, that those funds are still available.

Committee Reports:

Book Fair – Eleanor Weis reported that it will run Dec. 3rd – 7th, with set up the Friday before the fair. A motion was made and passed to give a $10 coupon to free and reduced lunch students; all to be organized thru Mrs. Beers; as well as 1 free book per headstart student not to exceed $15 and a 25% discount for teachers and staff (books sold at cost). This time because there isn’t an evening event coinciding with the fair, the thought would be to have a story teller. $200 will be allocated for the family event on Tuesday night 6:30-9pm

Fall Harvest Festival – Things coming along, just need a few more volunteers.

Outdoor Beautification – Catherine Linberg reported the following:

  • 111 pumpkins were collected at the 4th annual pumpkin composting drive
  • The October work day went well
  • The kids in Sacc participated in an outdoor beautification day by raking and redressing our scarecrow kids

Sock Hop – All went well, we made money and the hope is to have another in April.

Principal’s Report:

Mrs. Toatley reported that our new Assistant Principal, Avis Russell will start 11/08 and thanked Mr. Atkins who helped in the interim. SCA is sponsoring Socks for Soldiers which is helping in our committment to HWES’ good citizenship role. There are two new programs being launched:

1.     Ladies by Choice – a tutor program for 5th grade girls meeting 2 times a month with the goal of helping with self esteem

2.     Readers for Leaders – a program that partners South Lakes Varsity basketball players with our students to work together.

There has been some talk of a partnership with Whole Foods and in April Channel 21 will run a story about our sculpture garden. Lastly, the Learning Lab is up and running. This is classroom space where special ed. classes can be conducted in a smaller setting.

Mini- Grants:

Mrs. Walenius – requested funds, $500, for colonial days on Nov. 20th. Motion made by Susan Sather to grant request, it was seconded and passed.

Mr. Azimi – requested funds for 6th grade GT and General Ed. for kits to be used in the weather section of studies. The 340 kits are not reusable. Motion made by Eleanor Weis to grant request, it was seconded and passed.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:55pm.
