Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences

February 20, 2007

The regular meeting of the Hunters Woods PTA was held on February 20, 2007 at Hunters Woods Elementary School. PTA President Maureen Becker called the meeting to order at 7:38 pm.

Minutes from January meeting were read and approved as corrected.

Silent Auction – Susan Sather (received first because she needed to leave the meeting) reminded the group that March 23 rd is the date for the school’s Silent Auction. She has letters out to 100 companies looking for donations. Everyone is encouraged to contact companies by using the template letter on the PTA website. Teachers and staff were encouraged to donate their time as an auction item.

Class baskets will be broken down to create smaller, more affordable items. A basket preparation night will occur on Friday, March 16 th for all room parents who would like help assembling their baskets.

Volunteers are needed for various positions before, during and after the silent auction, including set-up, Movie night, etc. High school students may be chaperones during the Movies, which will be based upon age group, separating K-3 and 4-6 grades. Go to keep in touch to sign-up for volunteering.

Newsletter – Reminder that articles are due by March 7 th, to be distributed on March 13th.

Correspondence – Two thank-you letters were received by Mrs. Toatley and read to the general meeting.

President’s Report

Maureen Becker thanked Susan Sather, Annie Nasr, Deborah Lannen and others for all their hard work in making Skate Night successful. She thanked Patrick Ware for the great job he is doing with the Music Man Jr., school play. She thanked Lisa Groves, Cathy Germaine, Norma Morris, and Rachael Negri for all their hard work and dedication getting the school ready for the Arts Integration Celebration.

Talent Share – Talent Share is scheduled for March 9 th and rehearsals will take place on March 1 st.

Maureen Becker stated that the PTA Bylaws need to be renewed by June; giving 30 days notice before we can vote on them. She is setting up a committee to change the current working bylaws. If you are interested in participating on this committee, please contact Maureen directly. Also, Maureen will be attending a bylaw training meeting this Saturday, Feb. 23 rd. If anyone is interested in attending, please contact Maureen.

Treasurer’s Report – Deborah Lannen reported that the current budget will change dramatically when the Book Fair scholarships are entered. She asked for an invoice for the Afterschool Fall Session for Lacrosse, which was organized by Lisa Gordon.

Teacher’s Report – The teachers asked for boxes for their classrooms for Snickerdoodle contributions. They also inquired about Snickerdoodle presentations which were given to some but not all of the classes. Lastly, the teachers gave a big thank you to Lisa Groves who masterminded the presentation of the art for the Arts Integration Celebration.

Kathy Germaine presented a mini-grant idea for the artist in residence program featuring, Mark Pilato; who is scheduled for April 30 th – May 4 th. She discussed items she would like to purchase and a general discussion ensued concerning the installation of the sixth grade sculpture. She stated that she would present her formal grant proposal at the next PTA meeting.

Committee Reports –

Jump Rope for Life: The PE teachers and the American Heart Association are teaming up to have a day for raising money during a Jump Rope for Life activity, which is planned to take place during school PE classes. Two parent volunteers were recruited to count the donations received and distribute the incentive gifts to the children after the event. This event should take place in May.

Principal’s Report – Mrs. Toatley thanked everyone for their support of the school’s International Night, especially Raba Letteri!

Mrs. Toatley reported that the Art Integration Celebration was a wonderful success with many members of the community visiting the school, including School Board member, Stew Gibson and Deputy Superintendent, Rich Manuscae. She thanked Lisa Groves for all her hard work.

Mrs. Toatley said that she would be attending a performance of the Music Man Jr. and that each of the Vice Principals would be attending as well.

Mrs. Toatley reported that writing SOL’s for the 5 th grade would be taking place the first week of March (5-9). She stated that there is a Homework Club on Weds. from 3:15-4:30, which need high school or parent volunteers. Also a Remediation class is being held on Tuesdays from 3:15-5:15 as a preparation for SOL’s.

New Business

Sock Hop – The spring Sock Hop needs a chairperson and volunteers, who are encouraged to contact Maureen Becker to schedule times and a date.

The next PTA meeting will be held April 2, 2007 at 7:30pm at the school library. See the agenda for other upcoming events and dates.
