The Special Education Committee held our first focus meeting on Friday February 26th. In the future, the committee will be meeting regularly on the first Wednesday of every month beginning in April 2016. All are welcome!

April 6th 2016 Committee News:
At the April 6th SpEd Committee Meeting we had a special faculty guest, Jill Moore, 2nd grade teacher. Jill presented the plans for a “Little Library” project that she is developing with Kristen Eddy, HWES OT and Christian Snell, 2nd grade teacher. The goal of the “Little Library” is to engage students on the issues of emotional, social and self-regulation strategies. As children develop, education is greatly affected by the environment in which they live and grow, their social engagement and their emotional lives. The Special Education Committee is extremely excited to work alongside the “Little Library” team as there is much cross-over with our committee plans to develop a “Little Resource Center” for Students, Families and Staff that will address the Special Needs of our students and community.
In addition, the Special Education Committee has been developing questions for the PTA survey that will be sent to Parents and Caregivers later this spring. We hope to learn from our school community what resources would be most helpful to our students, families and faculty.
We have also discussed our plans to begin a Parent Strategy Series for the 2016-2017 school year. We plan to have guest speakers come present on a range of topics. Topics may include: reading strategies, anxiety, adaptive sports, an introduction to the Parent Resource Center and many more. We’d love to get your feedback!
As always, we would like to encourage interested parents and caregivers to attend our monthly meetings held on the first Wednesday of every month through the end of the 2016 school year. We also plan to have some planning meetings over the summer.
